I Love The Spoons
August 3rd
2008
Hello, Blake Makers. I have an extra special treat for you today. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of connecting with the Spoon Sisters. Like most of the people I meet these days, we haven’t actually met in person. We had an hour-long conversation over the phone which was all we needed to feel like family. I loved how they both got on the phone, talked over each other, and finished each other’s sentences. It was so cute, and so very Spoony!
Well, I loved them so much that I asked if they’d be interested in guest blogging right here on Blake Makes. They loved the idea, and so here we are. This is the first of what I hope will be many posts from the Spoons. I’ve asked them to blog about the nifty little finds that they sell on their site. Oh, and because this is Blake Makes, you know we’ll be giving some away (stay tuned)!
I’ll let the Spoons take it from here. Ladies, after you!

The Spoon Sisters happily here and feeling honored that we are guest bloggers on Blake Makes! So, we have to say a big thank you to Bon Appetite magazine for bringing us together. You see, the magazine featured one of our favorite type of items… a set of spoons…Dipping Spoons that is (You ask what are Dipping Spoons? Hmmmmm…read on). Blake saw the feature and contacted us. The rest is Internet history.
We have a gift website, www.spoonsisters.com, that’s been around for almost seven years now. We’ve been called “quirky” by Time Magazine; “one of the best websites you probably never heard of” by Lucky Magazine, “convenient shopping with useful gifts sporting cool twists” by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and “at the top of our must-click list” by Redbook.
Yes, we really are sisters - that’s always the first question that we get asked. Known as the “Big Spoon” and the “Little Spoon,” we’re nicknamed based on age, not size. Our gift site sells products that are “classic to kitsch and funny to functional.” With a name like ours, we are also partial to kitchen related products and gadgets, and, of course, we have a category on our website called “Spoon Related”….how could we not!?!
Let’s face it, Spoons are a truly universal item…but we do our best to find odd, quirky, and sometimes totally off the wall interpretations of our favorite utensil and we’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to a few.
What makes them so special? Dipping Spoons have extra long handles that allow you to “dip” them into most spice jars to retrieve even the last little bit of seasoning at the bottom. They definitely help eliminate wasting spices that so often happens when trying to pour tiny amounts of seasonings into the bowl of a small measuring spoon. The set nests five spoons: 1/8 teaspoon, ¼ teaspoon, ½ teaspoon, teaspoon and tablespoon.
Now, some of you might have heard about this spoon as Rachael Ray adopted it and gave it a ton of promotion. Actually, we had promotion on it in Family Circle Magazine way back in 2005. It was also featured in O, The Oprah Magazine. If you have never seen or used the Lazy Spoon, it has a small groove in the middle of the handle that allows it to balance comfortably on the edge of your pot, waiting patiently for you to stir or serve.
This 12” long spoon is beautifully hand crafted from Wild Cherry Wood; it is a truly functional work of art that eliminates the need for a spoon rest. A really cool plus, the Lazy Spoon is available for right or left-handed cooks, and they’re made in the good ol’ USA.
Of course, our favorite spoon is always a happy one, so we LOVE this one…the Happy Spoon! It’s the utensil version of those Smiley Faces that keep popping up all over people’s emails, at the bottoms of letters, etc, etc. Use the Happy Spoon as a slotted utensil, or two to serve salad. It also works perfectly well just placed in a position of honor in your kitchen, displaying its happy faces so everyone who enters can see it and smile!
They’re melamine so great for outdoor entertaining. Plus, they come in a ton of colors: white, red, kiwi green, turquoise and pink. By the way, the Happy Spoon and the Dipping Spoons make terrific Stocking Stuffers for Christmas.
As Spoons, we embrace innovative design in our utensil of choice. Here’s a cross between a strainer and a ladle that allows the cook to separate solids from liquids. You can scoop, pour and strain all in one tool. The Little Spoon is forever making chicken stock (how could any good cook live without tons of that liquid gold) and she’s especially fond of this ladle for straining her stocks. The long handle makes it easy to grip and the curved end makes for easy hanging storage.
For every novice chef too green to guess at what a smidgen really equals…here’s the best set of spoons you could get them….the Dash, Pinch and Smidgen Spoons that give concrete measurement for those age old sage cooking directions, where it says a pinch of this, and a dash of that.
Mothers, please look away, but not before you tell your kids, and, yes, maybe even your husbands, to come read this last spoon entry. We have discovered the Zing! Spoon - A Utensil for Flinging Food (Hey after all, it is a spoon so we HAVE to report on it). Let’s face it, sometimes there is a need to launch lunch or defend dinner, and this is the perfect utensil to do it with. It’s easy to use; simply load up a particularly mushy pea or broccoli floret, aim, pull back the spring-loaded handle and watch your food take flight. Granted we do realize that Food Fights can leave stains on your walls, but the tons of laughter generated just might be worth it!
For us, Blake is the man of the hour. ‘Til the next time, bye from us Spoon girls. Have a happy and safe rest of summer!
