Heard of YouBar? Have a YouBar!
June 17th
2008
UPDATE: This giveaway is now closed. We will announce the winners soon! bk
I’m a foodie, and as such you can probably assume that I’m not as trim as I could be. I don’t go to the gym, pump iron or really even move all that much (which is about to change with a new project [Healthy Blake]).
I do own a really nice treadmill, and every once in a while I replace a daily meal with a protein shake. Sometimes I even replace a meal with a nutrition bar, which brings us to YouBar.

Let me start by saying that I probably wouldn’t have been interested in YouBar if it was just another protein bar, but they’ve put a very innovative spin on the concept by letting people like you and me build our own bars.
They sent me a sample pack that included Honey Cashew, Breakfast Bar and Great Date With Chocolate. The Breakfast Bar had a strong coffee flavor, and not much chocolate. It was dense, spongy and a little sticky which made it my least favorite of the three.
I didn’t expect to like Great Date With Chocolate, but it was really good. It tasted a little like chewy chocolate fudge with maybe a little dark cherry. There was a little Fig Newton action going on as well (this was my co-workers’ favorite).
Honey Cashew (pictured left) was my hands down favorite. It tasted like this honey fudge I got from the Farmer’s Market a while back, but with a lot of cashewiness…like a whole lot. It was firm, but crumbled and melted the moment I bit-in.
Now, I happen to love cashews. When I was in college, I always talked about starting a company that made cashew peanut butter, and (of course) I called it, Cashutter.
Anyways, I’m actually nibbling on a Honey Cashew bar as I write this post. I’m glad I am because I forgot about the little bits of crispy rice that add a surprising, mousy little crunch.
Each of these bars is around 150 calories, and contain 8 grams of fiber. Sound good? Heard enough? Want some? OK!
Here’s another Blake Makes Giveaway! We’ve got 50 sample packs (each containing 6 bars) to give away! Comment on this post for your chance to win! Power to the people!
We don’t ask much, but we do ask a little:
- Make sure you’re registered with our SOOPZ Network. Register Now!
- Sorry, but U.S. and Canadian residents only this time.
- We’d like you to be interested in blogging about YouBar, and not just want free food.
- We’d also like you to link to us and to YouBar if you do decide to post.
Good luck! We’ll announce the winners soon!

I’m a loUiSiAnian!
I would love to EAT and REVIEW YouBars because I’ve been struggling to make my own bars (MeBars?) unsuccessfully for some time now.
Do I solemnly swear to link and post about BlakeMakes and YouBar? I do!
And now for the shameless begging: PLEEEEEEEEEAZE!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by GumbeauxGal on June 17th, 2008 at 1:02 amI would love to try these bars. They sound so good and I am all for nutrition bars. I am a sooper and I will for sure love to blog about these bars, if I am a lucky chosen one to receive it. The great date with chocolate bar sounds like something I would love. I hope you choose me!! Thanks and have a great week!!!!
Posted by Lindsey on June 17th, 2008 at 1:26 amThough I prefer to get my protein from much more simple and whole foods, I’m prepping for a century ride this season - 100 miles on my bike in one go - and protein bars have become a necessary for fuel during long period of time spent on the road.
I’ve been partaking of Balance Bar’s Organic line, which I quite like, but would love to try something different!
And, of course, a review on my blog is already a definite if the bars become mine!
Posted by Melissa on June 17th, 2008 at 2:16 am1. I’m registered.
2. I’m in South Carolina
3. I will blog about YouBar for sure! I went to their website yesterday after you sent out the email. These bars look amazing! I love that you can make all your own choices. My husband and I have been on a health kick since January. These would be a great addition to our diets.
4. I will link to YouBar and BlakeMakes on my review of the bars. I have a feeling if we try the bars we will be hooked and want to order them over and over!
PLEASE let me be one of the 50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Kristy on June 17th, 2008 at 5:34 amI’ve never been a purveyor of energy bars in the past, but 150 calories fits right into my lunchtime snack schedule. The mix of that and natural ingredients makes this a surefire winner.
Posted by Mike on June 17th, 2008 at 5:49 amOkay, I’ve lost every other contest but THIS one has my name all over it. I’m a healthy kinda girl and am always looking for yummy healthy foods for a few reasons:
1. I love guilt-free foods.
2. I love having control over what I’m eating.
3. I love tricking my husband into eatng healthy foods and letting him in on the trick after he proclaims how much he likes it.
4. I’m a teacher. It’s the end of the school year. My kindergarteners are nuts. I need a reward for my long (but wonderful!) year!
Thanks for considering me, Blake!

3. DEfinately interested in blogging about them. I struggle with a very delicate stomach, and I’m always looking for healthy pre-workout snacks - these look like they fit the bill!
4. There’s always love for BlakeMakes and the products they trial run! Heck, Blakemakes has it’s own tag on my blog!
I would be perfect for this one. I normally don’t care for these kinds of bars, so if they’re really good, I’d definitely sing their praises on my blog. Also, my husband is Mr. Workout. He is kind of a legend at his gym. All the 20-something guys consider him a fitness role model. If he likes the bars and tells the gym guys about them, they will buy them.
Posted by Susan at Sticky,Gooey,Creamy,Chewy on June 17th, 2008 at 7:08 amI would LOVE to try one of these. I am a pretty healthy eater (though still not as trim as I could be either
but I haven’t found a protein bar that really does it for me yet. This one sounds good and I’m sure it is, with the Blake stamp of approval.
Posted by elly on June 17th, 2008 at 7:12 amI would love to try these! Looks like a great concept.
Posted by Karina on June 17th, 2008 at 7:15 amI would love to try a YouBar sample. I am trying to be an active gym goer and more natural foods eater and these sound like a great and healthy snack bar.

Posted by Lauren on June 17th, 2008 at 7:24 amI’d also love to try this. I’m a newbie to the blogging world (just started last Dec) and I’m registed and willing to try anything to give it an honest review!
Posted by Lisa on June 17th, 2008 at 7:31 amOoooh, healthy! I am totally intrigued by those flavors, so yeah, I would love to try these bars. And with three kids, a quick, healthy snack/meal replacement is always welcome!
Posted by LyB on June 17th, 2008 at 7:38 amI’ve been interested in YouBars since they were profiled in NYTimes… wouldn’t this just be the chance! I love that you can create your own, and since I saw the email from you, I’ve been poking around, designing my own… Fabulous!
Posted by Caitlin on June 17th, 2008 at 7:54 amOoo! Want a YouBar! With the way I bake,I’m really in need of something healthier to nibble on. Especially after trying to make sure in such a frugal way no brownies went to waste. In fact, since you’re encouraging us poor creatures to bake for your evil, evil blog you really should be at least pretending to be trying tomake us healthy! *giggle*

3. My blog is new and in search of inspiration … I’d love to share a yummy snack suggestion with my great aunt eugena in Alaska!
4. Silly Blake, links are a no brainer!
I am a SOOPER, Live in NC and try to blog about something new everyday (don’t hit that goal every time, but it is the goal!)… but most importantly, I work out with a trainer 3X a week and if I don’t fuel up about an hour before I simply don’t have the steam to power through. She kicks my butt! My appointment time is 5:45 pm so I leave right from work — thus protein/energy bars tend to be something I use to fuel up. Easy to carry, no refrigeration, etc…so I’d love to give these a try, and if they work out, order some custom bars!

I had never heard of YouBar but that cashew one sounds really good!
Posted by Jennifer on June 17th, 2008 at 8:22 amThese sounds excellent! I would love to be able to try them out. They would make a great breakfast on the go for me since I usually don’t eat breakfast. The honey cashew sounds mighty tasty!
Posted by Amber on June 17th, 2008 at 8:35 amI would definitely love to try these bars! I’ve been eating too many of my baked goodies lately, so something good for me is needed! Bring on the healthy snacks!
Posted by Ashley on June 17th, 2008 at 8:36 amWhat a wonderful idea for a nutrition bar! I often have a hard time finding a bar in which I enjoy all of the ingredients, but with these I could just make my own! How cool! I would love to try the samples, but I also really want to try to make my own and see how they come out. I’m lovin’ this give away.
Posted by Sarah on June 17th, 2008 at 8:40 amI would definately like to try these bars; I’m always on the lookout for a healthy, on the go snack. If I were selected, I’d review them on my food blog and link to both YouBar & BlakeMakes.

I would LOVE to blog about YouBar!
I will definitely link both!
My husband & I have been working on a “lifestyle change”-we are trying really hard to get healthy and provide our bodies with more natural food. The YouBar sounds like a great addition to our lifestyle!
Posted by Nicole on June 17th, 2008 at 8:46 amThose sound great, especially the date/chocolate one. Very intriguing, and I like that there isn’t a ton of calories in ‘em.
So, without further adieu…
1. Yep.

3. I would absolutely blog about Youbar. I think it’s an amazing concept. In today’s health conscience society everyone is always on the lookout for great, healthy snacks and meal replacements. Since convenience is at the core of American culture health bars have an important role in the marketplace. I gladly participate in this trend consuming at least one bar each day. My husband too! I love the idea that with Youbar you can create your own flavor combinations, making convenience more personal. As another poster said, I will not only blog about Youbar; I will also most likely buy them.
4. DUH! Of course I would link Blakemakes and You Bar. I need to entice more friends to sign-up to be a Sooper. As I said before, if you don’t you’re crazy and I can’t have crazy friends
I’m a Sooper!! I’ll def blog about some good health bars…I’m on a diet for my wedding and have been looking for satisfying, doesn’t taste like cardboard snacks!
By the way, my blog for the ketchup will be up soon :). I made meatloaf with it this past weekend (there are no pictures b/c the camera is broken)
and there is ketchup leftover too! YUM!
Thanks again for these giveaways!
TOTALLY awesome!!
Posted by joeysgirl2008(Amy) on June 17th, 2008 at 8:58 amWhile I can’t claim that I’m a legend at the gym or Ms. Fitness I’m certainly healthy and would love to try these bad boys out!
I’m a sooper hero, of course and would be happy to blog about these! Last time I was the recipient of chocolate from you, I made Samoa Cookie Brownies. Here’s my chance to make something healthy!
Posted by sharon on June 17th, 2008 at 9:21 amWhat a cool concept these bars are. Id really love to try them out. If I like any of them, I will build my own for sure. I may just do it anyways because I think they are soooo cool. Plus, Ive already emailed the link to my vegetarian sister, and vegan friend because I know they will buy them.
Posted by rachel on June 17th, 2008 at 9:33 amI’m in on all the requirements. Woo hoo!
I had so much fun playing around at the YouBar website. I loved the available choices. And being able to pick my own flavors is such a bonus. That’s the drawback to ready-made bars. There’s always something in there that’s not exactly what I’m looking for. I run after two small children on a daily basis, so I often turn to granola or breakfast bars to get me through the morning.
So, in essence, pick me pick me pick me!
Posted by Julie on June 17th, 2008 at 9:34 amOooops! I still have some “baby fat” to lose. My son is 5 months old. I’m sure my food blog has nothing to do with the extra pudge
Posted by Sherri on June 17th, 2008 at 9:47 amI just joined Soopers recently and would love to win the prize
Posted by Olga on June 17th, 2008 at 9:51 am1) not a fan of the gym: the way I make myself go to the gym is choosing something to watch on cable (b/c don’t have it at home): like Top Chef, which is now over. So I moved on to Food Network’s Next Star
2) all my dates have been rather disappointing lately, so a date bar is perfect!
3) cashews are my favorite nuts!!!
4) please, please, please pick me!!
you had me at “mousy little crunch.” i never thought the word “mousy” could be so appetizing…
how can i express my enthusiasm for the youbar?
haiku? it’s been done.
simple poem? ditto.
limerick? sounds good to me…
there was a young lady called grace.
she always had food on her face.
when asked “why the mess?”
she had to confess,
“i’ve found the most wonderful place…”
she referred to a site where you pick
ingredients to put in a stick.
choices are many–
you could even get skinny–
but you’d better go order right quick!
…and i’m spent. i hope you’ve enjoyed my praise of the youbar.
Posted by grace on June 17th, 2008 at 9:58 amI’ve heard about these bars and have been curious to try these - I’m a big fan of bar food for breakfast or that time at work when I have to stay late and know I need something to get me from 4 pm to 8 pm when I get to eat supper.
I’ve got a hankering for that cashew bar!! My favorite nut of all the nuts!

3. I’ve already done a snack bar review on my blog and am planning to do more, so this would be the perfeccctt oppurtunity~
4. I’ll link once I’m done posting, of course
YES! I’ve been waiting for you to put this up - so excited when the email came out! x)
Since I’m always running around, I am a total health bar buff, and I’ve been wanting to try these out for a while now. Actually, I have tried one variety of YouBar before because a friend of mine ordered a Cashew-Agave-etc. type Box and offered me one - I’ve had fun playing around on their site and I think it’s really neat how they are completely customizable to fit anyone’s dietary needs/preferences. (Plus they come with nutritional info, which is awesome.)
I’ve been restraining myself from ordering a box of my own because I’m not sure how certain flavor combinations would taste (while all the ingredients are wholesome, some might not taste that good when combined…) but now maybe I won’t have to. Time to take the plunge!
Pick me please? Pretty please?

4) Will do, sir!
When you sent out the Sooper Hero email the other, I checked out YouBar’s website and played around with the Build-A-Bar tool. This company is awesome! I came up with at least 3 bars that I can’t wait to try. I love that they use all organic products in their bars. I normally steer clear of meal/snack bars because they are usually full of sugar and processed ingredients. I’m pretty health conscious (or at least I try to be most of the time), so I totally appreciate this company’s concept. I think I’m going to order some for my husband because his birthday is coming up. How cool would it be to get one of these named just for you?! I think it would be cool anyway, but I’m sentimental like that. I would love to try out these bars and blog about how cool they are! And of course, Blake Makes always gets props.
Posted by Keturah on June 17th, 2008 at 12:11 pmOoooh I would love to try these bars. I have been hunting and tasting trying to find one that I liked…maybe these are them??? I sure would love to post about them too!!!

Posted by chefbarbie on June 17th, 2008 at 12:20 pmMy friend emailed me about these - they look like so much fun. I’ve been meaning to sit down with my daughter and create a signature bar for her breakfast.
Posted by foodmomiac on June 17th, 2008 at 1:14 pmI’d love some YouBars… then I can call them MeBars when they arrive.
Posted by Jessica on June 17th, 2008 at 1:28 pmI’d absolutely love to try one! I checked out the website as soon as I got your email about it yesterday!
Posted by Suzy-Qzy on June 17th, 2008 at 1:34 pmWoooo! These look awesome! I can’t wait to try the Honey Cashew…honey fudge sounds amazing and the photo looks soooooo good. The date one sounds great too…chocolate plus fig newtons? Sign me up!
I’m also intrigued about the idea of customized bars that don’t need to be refrigerated. I was chatting with a friend who’s OBSESSED with protein bars yesterday, and he was saying most “customized” protein bars need to be chilled all the time, which is a pain. So these look really perfect!
I would also love to blog about these, and maybe I can get my protein-bar-obsessed friend to put in a review as well!
In fact, if I win, I think I’ll set up a little tasting party so some different folks can put in their two cents!

Plus, I am intrigued by the nutty rice cereal and why it merits being italicized.
Posted by Blair on June 17th, 2008 at 2:30 pmI recently started working at a small chef’s shop/cooking school. One of the perks is GREAT FOOD. We can raid the refridgerators and eat whatever is left over from the previous classes. I eat so well….risottos, homemade pastas, polentas, ice creams, cobblers, cakes. Can you say carb overload?
It’s all so good; I don’t want to turn anything down. But, my clothes have been feeling a big snug lately. A healthy breakfast/snack bar might be just the thing I need.
Get my drift, yo?
In other words, I’d love to try and blog out YouBars.

Here’s one I’m really interested in (hurrah!)
Though I don’t diet anymore (fortunately I’ve finally managed to get that healthy weight/balanced meal thing going for once in my life), I’m really curious about YouBars. I don’t like all energy bars, but these flavours sound much tastier! I’d love a sample, and if I like them I may get some custom bars of my own. I’m a big fan of anything customizable (Adagio teas, for example, have my heart). But why I think that you should send me some YouBars most of all is that I’m a law student, going to school year round, I work thirty hours a week in two different jobs, plus I volunteer for the United Nations Association, have to dedicate some time to two blogs, and am studying seven different languages - clearly, I’m a busy woman, and I *NEED* some more easy on-the-go options. To top that all off, the floodwaters are just starting to recede in Iowa City, and though I am safe (and mail can get to me!) I don’t drive and am having trouble getting to a grocery store. Some energy bars would be great to break the monotony of some of the blah packaged food I’m soon going to have to start depending on! Thanks, Blake
Keep up the good work.

These sound so good and I definitely qualify! Maybe these would jump start my “healthy lifestyle” change! I’m trying to incorporate healthier food and these sound like a great way. There are some protien bars I like and then there are some that are (in my opinion) horrible. I would love a chance to review these!
Posted by megan on June 17th, 2008 at 9:36 pmI’ve recently been working to add more balance to my life via a relatively new job (barely over a year), a new residence (from condo to house), and a new perspective (enjoy each day and all that). I started getting weekly local organic fruit & veggie deliveries — a “sooper” thing if I do say so myself — and have been learning what to do with all sorts of items I haven’t normally cooked with (e.g. kale). Its all part of my quest to be healthier & happier. Some awesome bars with lots of fiber sound like a kick-a$% addition to the mix (please??)…
Posted by gina on June 17th, 2008 at 9:52 pmWhew, I remembered to check my junk folder, and there was your email. I fit all the criteria, and I would love to try these!

I admit, I still need to blog about the last give-away…but it’s coming… SOON! The only reason it’s not up yet is because the chocolate came in the mail while I was on vacation. So, my friend picked up the package for me…and she needs to give it to me yet! I’m afraid she’s been nibbling on the goods!
Summer’s a perfect time to get healthy. What better way to start than with a YOU-bar?
