Dulce Pause, Here’s A Poboy Recipe!

Hello Blake Makers and Sooper Heroes! Wowsers, it’s been a busy couple of weeks. There are tons of posts and information coming about the next round of PBDDL and more (and different) free food on Soopz, but I want to post some food! Enough dulce for now. We live in New Orleans, so let’s talk about Poboys!

Yes, we actually eat them on a regular basis down here. No, they’re not just some touristy treat, but I will say that we rarely make them at home.

To get really good poboys, you’ve got to go out for them…like to a gas station, or some nondescript shack somewhere (that’s where you’ll find the best).

I wrote about a poboy like this months ago when I discovered the Banh Mi at the New Orleans Poboy Preservation Festival. It was my favorite of the fest because it was daring and different (I get really descriptive in my Serious Eats post).

Bridget and I decided to make these at home, and they turned out great! We grabbed the recipe from Epicurious.com.

To be honest, I was a little uncertain because of the combination of:

  • Asian fish sauce
  • Daikon
  • Cilantro
  • Liverwurst

But, they’ve been doing this in Vietnam for centuries, so of course it turned out spectacularly. Everything blends together in your mouth, and it was sublime. My favorite part is the pickled carrot and diakon salad - it’s sweet and sour at the same time.

(Bridget told me my Nesties are going to be hungry for more than just dulce soon, so in addition to being for everyone else, this post is especially dedicated to my Nestie readers! Hello!)

  • I love Vietnamese food and have yet to try one of these sandwiches (on my to do list ;). There are plenty of little hot spots around us that serve them… I’ll have to give it a try, yours looks great!

  • I had my first sandwich of one these agout a year ago. And I love it, I like all the different flavors salty spicy and even a little sweet.Its filling without being to heavy.Your picture is so pretty makes me want to rush home and fix it.

  • Mmmm I love these! There’s a Lee’s Sandwiches on my way home, so I go quite often. I love it because it’s a filling, delicious meal, and it’s cheap!

  • That looks delicious! I’m obsessed with bahn mi. They’re my second favorite sandwich. My VERY favorite sandwich ever was a fried catfish po’boy from Captain Sal’s on St. Claude.

  • mmmm, this looks beautiful! i love how you make such a simple sandwich look so elegant! i’m vietnamese so i grew up eating these all te time! in “little saigon” (in southern CA), you can get them for just a buck! the carrot and daikon ‘relish’ was always a staple in our house growing up - my mom would have HUGE jars of this stuff premade and we’d eat it with a lot of different dishes. hope you’ve been inspired to go out and try some more vietnamese food :)

    Missy, Fried Catfish poboy? Now you’re speaking my language. I ate fried catfish nearly every week as a child. My parents were big fishers.

    Nikki, that’s a crying shame. You’ve got to get down to NOLA, meet me and I’ll take you to get an amazing poboy.

    Jaime, I LOVE taking pictures of food. That’s where all of this started for me. Blake Makes and Soopz is sort of taking on a life of its own, but Bridget is keeping me grounded (and keeping food on Blake Makes).

  • g’day!. Glad u love Aussies! sounds like you had a ripper of a time when you were taveling. I adore these vietnamese rolls - i’m fortunate to live near a suburb, dubbed the Chinatown of Melbourne, where 95% of the precinct are asian specialities stores. It would be easy for you to walk by and think you’re in the street markets of a Sth East Asian country. You go in the morning and see people eating bowls of pho or congee and people stocking their basket with asian greens. Over here they use pate and this mayonaise butter and I usually have mine with char sui pork, grilled chicken or red pork meatballs. nom, nom…. It’s addictive, mate! They also make pate bread stick, where they get skinny crunchy bread stick,s halve it and lather on the pate and then put back together. OMG white bread and pate, so bad…yet so good. Next time im there, i’ll take photos….

  • Yay thanks for the shout out to the nesties. Great job making this V/N sandwich. Here at the office in Houston we are literally a mile away from the BEST V/N sandwiches EVER. They are so tasty and the cilantro and cucumbers make the sandwich so delish. Thanks so much for the great recipe. I can’t wait to try it!
